Connecting with soundclouds’ api is not that new. I’m not exactly sure on the date soundcloud released it but I know it was after the oAuth push. For those of you who don’t know OAuth is “an open protocol to allow secure API authorization in a simple and standard method from desktop and web applications.” Its’ archives go back to October of 2007 and they recently amped up their push for OAuth after who know’s who realized that the “Authenticate with Facebook” api was going viral and that Facebook wasn’t/isn’t about to open up their source code for this authentication method. So in short OAuth is a response to “Authenticate with Facebook” and everyone is embracing it (everyone except Facebook that is; i said in short).

I’m pretty excited soundcloud is letting developers have a go at their API aka Application Programming Interface. According to soundcloud, “The SoundCloud API makes it possible for a third-party app to act as a SoundCloud user, but then the app needs to be “logged in” as well.” I still haven’t seen anything that I would find more useful than soundclound itself I did come across a few developers who have started work on what looks to be exciting progress.

First Muxtape.com

Here’s a look at Dan Deacon’s page. It’s not even up and running for the public and it is invite only (if it ever gets started) but it looks promising, runs off of HTML5.
Mextape says:
It’s currently a work in progress. When it’s done,

    * bands will be able to sell downloads
* anyone will be able to make mixes of music on the site
* labels will be able to manage their bands in one place
* developers will be able to build on our API

Regardless the music is pulled from soundcloud on to a very clean player.

Next is Tracks On A Map.com which displays soundcloud uploads from a map. I don’t believe it to display every song but as they say “On Tracks on a Map you can listen to SoundCloud tracks from around the world from any genre. Just click a city to start the fun!” I learned that it was written at Music Hack Day in Berlin (which I didn’t even know exsisted, which looks pretty cool, which SoundCloud, Last.fm, RjDj and Songkick all participated in).

In addition to these, soundclound is promoting two other methods of incorporating the API. You can use Scup, a Mac/PC based desktop application, to upload multiple tracks to your SoundCloud account and create a set on the fly. As a dj I don’t see the need to be able to create a mix on the web (I’ll use my technics thank you very much) but I can see where this is going.

Lastly a company named Audiofile Engineering, LLC, quiet some time ago, created an app for the iphone called FiRe. FiRe is pretty tight, i use it from time to time when my hacked iphone isn’t acting crazy. “Audiofile Engineering’s FiRe application is by far the most advanced stereo audio recording application we’ve seen for the iPhone and iPod Touch, going far beyond the limitations of previous go-to apps…” and guess what you can upload directly to your soundcloud account.

All this being said I am still looking for a soundcloud like player that I can run on my own server. Not sure if that will ever happen but here’s to hope.

Here are a couple elements we discuss and write on during the Ghost Writer sessions which are randomly held somewhere in Austin, Texas.

-Cinquain (pronounced SING-cane) – Poetry with five lines. Line 1 has one word (the title). Line 2 has two words that describe the title. Line 3 has three words that tell the action. Line 4 has four words that express the feeling, and line 5 has one word which recalls the title. (namely two in the first, four in the second, six in the third, and eight in the fourth, before returning to two syllables on the last line)

-Tetractys is five-line poem of 20 syllables with a title, arranged in the following order: 1,2,3,4,10.with each line standing as a phrase on its own.It can be inverted, doubled etc and was created by the late English poet Ray Stebbings.

-Alliteration-a rhetorical stylistic device that consists in repeating the same consonant sound at the beginning of several words in close succession. (stops: [p], [t], [k], [n], and [m])

-Assonance is refrain of vowel sounds to create internal rhyming within phrases or sentences, and together with alliteration and consonance serves as one of the building blocks of verse. For example, in the phrase “Do you like blue?”, the /uː/ (“o”/”ou”/”ue” sound) is repeated within the sentence and is assonant.

-Consonance is the repetition, at close intervals, of the final consonants of accented syllables or important words, especially at the ends of words, as in blank and think or strong.

-Limericks are short sometimes bawdy, humorous poems of consisting of five Anapaestic lines. Lines 1, 2, and 5 of a Limerick have seven to ten syllables and rhyme with one another. Lines 3 and 4 have five to seven syllables and also rhyme with each other.

-Anapaest – a metrical foot of three syllables, two short (or unstressed) followed by one long (or stressed). In classical quantitative meters it consists of two short syllables followed by a long one.
The following is from Byron’s The Destruction of Sennacherib:
The Assyrian came down like a wolf on the fold
And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold
And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea
When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee.

-Onomatopoeia is a figure of speech in which words are used to imitate sounds. “oink” or “meow” or “roar” croak zap click crow cuckoo

-Phonaesthetics is the claim or study of inherent pleasantness or beauty (euphony) or unpleasantness (cacophony) of the sound of certain words and sentences. Derives from Greek meaning “good sound”. Euphony is refers to pleasant spoken sound that is created by smooth consonants such as “ripple’. Euphony is an agreeable sound reflected in the phonetic quality of poetic words.

-Euphemism is the substitution of a soft agreeable expression instead of one that is harsh or unpleasant. For example ‘pass away’ as opposed to ‘die’.(a figure of speech in which someone absent or dead or something nonhuman is addressed as if it were alive and present and was able to reply.)

-Meters: The meter in poetry involves the exact arrangements of syllables into repeated patterns called feet within a line.
The number of metrical feet in a line are described as follows:
▪	Dimeter — two feet
▪	Trimeter — three feet
▪	Tetrameter — four feet
▪	Pentameter — five feet
▪	Hexameter — six feet
▪	Heptameter — seven feet
▪	Octameter — eight feet

There will be another Ghost Writers Session Soon!

Talk about a hectic ass month. Seems like i got a big show twice a week these last couple. Been planning a lot of got things in the coming months, here and abroad. Locally there some things happening i want you to be informed about.

Firstly, the Wednesdays I do are changing format. Why try to wild out mid week, when i can save my self for the weekend. I will be focusing on every thing Jazz now and the hours have changed, from 8pm-Midnight. Found a tight video of some good ole Duke I put on my website. I’ll be swinging it too, a gypsy jazz here a latin jazz there and POW…..

Malverde on Wednesdays

Thursday

Locally Thrown

This guy is gonna be bananas. Interesting concept also, six local austin djs were given music from ten local Austin bands. Each dj has a 30 minute set to play at least one track from every artist. It’s not a competition, in fact it’s a benefit for a cat named Ian who was struck by a car on his bike, most of you know the chap from the Riverboat Gamlers.

In preparation i spent the last 10 hours re-editing the tracks. Please enjoy!!
DOWNLOAD ZIPPED TRACKS (45.3)
Feel free to share too!

Friday
I have a gig over at the Sweat Leaf then over to creekside for the mayhem, Manolo Black will be joining me this week!

fridays

Saturday
Oh boy I’ve been waiting for this for a hot minute. Bjork vs OutKast! ICELANTA!!
Peep the video and audio i chopped up!!

I recently took up yet another bad habit, guests of my house can be a testament to that. At around the hour when my roommates get home from work an annoying, yet calming, sound of grown men tinkering with tiny skateboards takes over. That’s the least funny part too. Trying to transfer from broken VCR to removed cd burner might top that. It’s only appropriate that I youtube tech deck too! Waalaa! Sure enough grown men across our great nation divulge in the art of tech decking as it were. My collection of tech decks is minute in comparison to most but come on, i’ve only been addicted for a little bit. I guess it’s time to step my game up.

I wonder how many websites there are out there? All these new technologies are mashing and melding to form a more perfect union. Between the social networking sites, the forums, the fancy animation sites and all the boring plain jane html sites out there, i rustled up a list of sites that a) i think will be used by many in the near future, b) offer compelling new technology and/or c) just look good. Enjoy.

This first site www.jingproject.com is so ingenious. Three very simple steps to get going, and it’s a downloadable application. Simply:
* Snap a picture of your screen.
* Record video of onscreen action.
* Share instantly over the web, IM, email.
As the site says it’s free software that adds visuals to your online conversations. This comes in handy when you want to show your homie how to quantize something using FX Pansion Guru or introduce your friends to your process of making a flyer (hint hint). You can record your video and upload it to your flickr account, upload using an ftp server, save it, or copy it to your clipboard to share some where else.
Here’s a screen shot of the program running on my mac:

That’s right is sits quiet in the top corner of your screen. Very unintrusive, indeed simple is beautiful!

The company that makes this www.techsmith.com also makes other screen capturing tools like SnagIt and Camtasia which offer, for a fee, more editing options for those folks that make a ‘living’ off of posting video tutuorials, thank you so much by the way for that.

This next site i found looking through the hundreds of informative posts on www.readwriteweb.com which itself is very handy and should be added to you RSS feeds. The site is still in Beta meaning you have to be invited to use, so I actually haven’t been able to try it out yet although I’m pretty excited about it. The site: www.rockdex.com. I really can’t explain it better than the actual site does so in quotes:
What is RockDex Pro?

RockDex Pro is a revolutionary web application that tracks 1000’s of music websites and collects data on any artist, such as blog posts, tweets, plays, and much more.

RockDex analyzes and presents the information to you in one convenient dashboard that gives you a high level view of what is happening online with the artists that are important to you.

Drill down into your data to discover trends, gauge the effectiveness of your marketing, and find out what your fans are saying–and where they are saying it. RockDex Pro helps you capitalize on a valuable and too often overlooked asset: Your Data. Plug in and sign up now!

Although when you go to sign up it informs you of the very sad fact that it’s in Beta. It does offer a glimpse of hope however, saying it will send you an invite code! This looks like a useful tool for Artists, Labels, Managers, Booking Agents, A&R Reps and Publicists. The folks that made this also made www.musicarsenal.com.
Here are screenshots from the video on their site:

And you can upload a song to their soundcloud account and they’ll let you know if you rock!

Lastly, for today, CargoCollective.com. This is from their site:
Cargo is a web publishing (CMS) and community-building platform currently in development. It powers a variety of creative communities in the fields of Education, Design, Research, and Conceptual Art. To apply for an account contact us here.
Cargo evolved out of the system that runs the SpaceCollective community. We found it remarkably successful and efficient in creating visual content on the web, placing a strong emphasis on design, layout, image quality and typography. Our goal is to dramatically increase the accessibility and exposure of creative individuals on the Internet, while aspiring to build a networked context that will contribute to the culture as a whole.

Like the previous site it is in Beta or as they call it ‘pre-release’ which looks like it means, if we think you’re good enough we might hook you up with an account. I like their taste though so good job.
Let me just hit you with some images then you go scroll the illness!

Taliesin emailed this out the other day and I finally got a chance to listen to it (which unfortunately i don’t do too often). Maybe we can get some translating going.
