I’ve been geeking out with my not so new, new iphone trying to figure ways to (however useful) to establish a connection between some of my favorite software (abelton, logic, arkaos, nuendo serato etc) and my touch screen iphone. I suppose an affinity to some of the studies of Toshio Iwai, dude that inspired the TENORI-ON, kind of lights a spark in me. Here’s a basic run down of different products and interfaces one could use. Most of these rely on GUI, open source platforms, bonjour and require setting up a network using wifi. THey send MIDI messages over WiFi to a server application on your computer, which relays the MIDI messages to your favorite MIDI capable applications. That’s the basics.

First up
www.itouchmidi.com
They make a series of products (ITM Keys, ITM Matrix, ITM Pad, ITM MCU, iTM DJ) all downloadable from the apple store from your phone. After installing that you need to install software from their site that enable you to create the networking I was talking about earlier. I’ll post videos below.

The good thing about matrix is you can create your own interface, up to 8 by 8, change the colors of the buttoms and add text to all of them.

i3L (pronounced “i thrill”)

http://thrill.artificialeyes.tv/i3L

Freeware music controller app, developed using Max/MSP from Cycling74 and is a support application for akaRemote (iPhone native application) by Masayuki Akamatsu.

This is your phone.

This is your computer.

I’ll just make it three although there are probably about a dozen out there by now. The last one I’m mentioning is a little more that just a midi controller. Using Cocoa programming and some other code it allows multiple users interact with one program. It’s complicated and i’m still working out the kinks.

MRMR
http://poly.share.dj/projects/#mrmr
Mrmr is an ongoing open-source research project to develop a standardized set of protocols and syntax conventions to control live installations and multimedia performances via mobile devices, plus you’re in control of your interface. I made a couple last night for serato I might unveil tonight.

Here’s a video explaining better,

Two good remotes to add.
Cubase RC
Protools and Logic

That’s it on that. Come out to 90s night tonight if you can handle it.
